Dr John Price is a Social and Cultural Historian who takes a ‘People’s History’ approach to nineteenth and twentieth-century British history, local history, and the history of London. He is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society
Historian
For John, People’s History is an inclusive, democratic, and empowering enterprise that widens and recentres the focus of history to encompass a broader and more representative body of people. It is also about encouraging people to take ownership of their own histories and increase the awareness and visibility of them.
John is the leading expert on the Watts Memorial to Heroic Self-Sacrifice in Postman’s Park in the City of London. He has published extensively on the subject, including the official history of the monument, and he regularly gives talks and walks on the subject of civilian heroism. He is Chair of the Friends of the Watts Memorial.
London Historian
In addition to more general London history, John focuses on the history of Lewisham and its surrounding areas, particularly Deptford and New Cross. This includes work on Lewisham’s historic events, its people, its communities, and its local landmarks.
John is a custodian for the Lewisham Local History Society’s Museum Archive Collection which underpins his Museum of Everyday Life project. John is also Chair of the Greater London Local History Committee of the London and Middlesex Archaeological Society.
Public Historian
John is an award-winning practitioner of Public History and Applied History, with Public and Community Engagement absolutely central to his work. He has undertaken a number of high-profile projects which have greatly impacted and increased public knowledge and understanding of key events in history. John is Director of History and Heritage for the New Cross Fire Foundation.
Educator
John is an award-winning educator and educational developer, with extensive experience in teaching and in developing programmes of education. John designed and developed the UK’s first taught-postgraduate programme in Black British History and has designed programmes in Public History and Heritage. John is a Visiting Research Fellow at King’s College London and a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
Author
John has authored several books, and has written extensively for edited collections, journals, and other publications. His most recent book, Heroes of Postman’s Park: Heroic Self-Sacrifice in Victorian London tells the dramatic story behind every one of the 54 tablets commemorated on the Watts Memorial in Postman’s Park London.
